Nepal King bids farewell to the throne - 11.06.08
The sceptre and crown that had been the heirloom for the Shah dynasty over all these years have been handed over to the Government when the country was declared a republic. He delivered a fourteen minutes speech where he said that his family members and he himself was not in any way involved in the massacre in his family that took place in the year 2001. He said he and his family have been defamed and the accusations against them were tortuous. The sixty year old Nepal’s last King Gyananedra was all respects for his people and he wanted to contribute to whatever he could do to maintain peace in his country. In a fifteen minutes speech that was charged with emotion, he said he had all respects to the Assembly’s decision to get rid of monarchy.
Gyanendra had ascended the throne when King Birendra of Nepal and his family had been killed in 2001 June killings in the Royal Family carried out by King Dipendra. Gyanendra would now move to the Nagarjuna Palace which is 7 kilometres west of the capital. In answer to the accusation that he had money or property abroad, he said that all his properties were in Nepal and he had no properties abroad.
